GILSLAND
( Formerly called Rose Hill ) is a hamlet in this township, at the extreme western boundary of the county, with a station On the Newcastle and Carlisle section of the North Eastern railway. Here is " Mumps’ ha " (Beggars' Hall), formerly kept as an inn, and the house mentioned in " Guy Mannering," in which Dandie Dinmont is described as telling the news of Ellangowan's death to Meg Merrilees the witch. Sir Walter Scott also relates (in the notes to that book) that Margaret Teasdale, the occupant, abstracted the bullets from the pistols of Fighting Charlie Liddesdale, and then caused three ruffians to pursue and attack him.
On the opposite bank of the Irthing, and in the county of Cumberland, is
Gilsland Spa, much frequented in the summer, on account of its beautiful scenery find the chalybate and sulphur springs issuing from the rocks; there are excellent baths, hotels and lodging houses.
The Reading Room and Public Hall were erected by public subscription in 1894, at a cost of £1600, and include a library of some 300 volumes; the hall is let for public entertainments, and will seat some 300 persons; visitors are admitted to the library and reading room at a charge of Id: per diem. Lamb esq. of Hay ton House. The area of Thirlwall is 7,967 acres of land and 47 of water; rateable value, £6,243 ; the population in 1901 was 610.
